  This course, centering upon multicultural issues, aims to help students learn and understand multiple cultures through English learning. Its contextualized curriculum relates the contents to issues of globalization to provide students with learning environments in which multicultural interactions and communication are made possible. By producing oral and written works in English, students can develop their interests and curiosities about multicultural societies, which can cultivate their tolerance for different cultures and broaden their global vision, thereby becoming qualified world citizens.
課程目標
  The course centers upon multicultural learning, communication skills, and global vision. By completing this course, students are expected to achieve the following objectives:
1. Be able to analyze different cultures, associate them with local cultures, and conduct field investigations or put their learning into practice.
2. Cultivate a humanistic disposition and have a deeper understanding of global issues, be able to think critically of specific issues, and exchange opinions in group discussions.
3. Enhance their English reading and listening comprehension skills, deliver very good oral presentations, and compose written works with clear statements.

課程大綱
  This course is designed to help students use English as a communication tool to learn and to discuss multicultural issues. Focusing on “ethnicity,” “identity,” “diversity,” and other related topics about cultures, the curriculum encourages students to relate the local culture to the other cultures from a cross-cultural perspective. Meanwhile, students are made to reflect on and re-recognize their own local culture after dialoguing with other cultures. In addition to in-class quizzes and activities, students are asked to conduct field investigation and attend study group to enhance communication skills in a real-life situation. By making oral presentations and writing assignments in English concerning multicultural issues, students can not only sharpen English speaking and writing skills but also cultivate a global vision.

  Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to:
1. express critical thoughts on multicultural issues in spoken and written English;
2. cultivate multicultural awareness and show tolerance and respect to multiple cultures;
3. enhance communication skills through group discussions and projects;
4. develop a global vision via local culture;
5. get familiar with self-learning by conducting field investigation and attending study group.

Please note:
1. No late or make-up work is accepted without an excused absence, granted only for illness (medical certification needed) or an extreme emergency with a notice to the instructor before class. Students who do not turn in written assignments will receive zero credit.
2. Students are expected to preview the scheduled readings before class, and participate eagerly in class discussions. Their performance and contribution in class will be counted for evaluating their “class participation.”
3. Regular attendance is required. Students should arrive on time; being late to class for more than 15 minutes will be counted one absence. The overall course score will have 15 points deducted for students with more than 3 absences for whatever reasons.
4. Any form of plagiarism is strictly prohibited. Violation will result in “no credit” for the course.
5. All assignments must be typed (12-point Times New Roman), double-spaced, and turned in at the beginning of the class. Students are required to OBSERVE the ethics of citing references.

課程大綱
  The course is made to help students engage in an effective communication, be familiar with global issues, and understand cultural diversity. It aims to help students to be open to assimilate to culture from other countries, to be familiar with different ways of looking at culture—the single culture view, the multiculturalist view, the pluralistic view, and finally to understand and appreciate influence from other cultures.
The course is composed of two parts: the first is to get to know cultural diversity around the world, and the second is to introduce our local culture to people from other countries. The students are expected to give an oral presentation analyzing cultural diversity, conduct an interview with people with multi-cultural background, or shoot a video to introduce the local scenic spots.
Different materials will be used to enrich this course.

課程大綱
  本課程的主軸有三:「多元文化」、「溝通能力」、和「全球公民」。
– 在「多元文化」方面,學生透過閱讀共同教材文章、一篇短篇故事以及自己收集的相關新聞或文章來體察自身文化與異文化的同與異。再者,學生也會根據不同文化間的差異來反思各文化中間可能發生的衝突以及合作關係。
– 在「溝通能力」方面,學生在閱讀過中長篇文章後,透過撰寫書面報告或是口頭呈現的方式來表達自己對於多元文化下不同情境的理解以及看法。此外,學生也將學習如何在團體討論過程中經由發現並且斡旋同學們之間的不同意見來落實異文化的體驗。
– 在「全球公民」方面,學生除了透過閱讀全球性相關議題的文章並且思考自己在全球化世界的位置之外,能夠更進一步地發想自己要能如何積極地參與不同的全球化議題,來成就自己為全球公民之實。
課程目標
  本課程以多元文化主題為核心,讓學生藉由英語文學習來認識和理解多元文化。 設計脈絡化課程,並搭配與全球化議題相關的內容,以提供學生多元文化交流與溝通的學習情境。讓學生在運用英文口說和寫作表達能力的同時,也能培養對多元社會的興趣和探討能力,進而產生對異文化的包容力,拓展學生國際視野,因而具備成為世界公民的能力。 本學期將討論的文化議題有四:immigration、landscape and exotic culture、life writing以及from globalization to localization。學生們將在課堂上研讀與此四大議題相關的素材,並且透過課堂活動來練習如何從自身經驗或是角度來理解、詮釋以及反思自身文化與其他文化在此四大議題上的異同之處。

1. Students are required to participate actively in class, including answering questions, participating in group work, as well as class discussion.
2. Food, drinks and the use of mobile are not allowed in class. Violations will be reflected in the final grade for the course.
3. There will be NO make-up quizzes for ANY reason. Also, late papers will NOT be accepted.
4. Being late for 15 minutes will be considered an absence.
5. If you are absent for 9 classes of the semester (including sick leave, leave for personal reason and school affairs), you will lose 10 points of the final grade. (3 classes per week; total 54 classes)
6. 學生須與自學園小老師預約兩次(期中考前一次、期末考前一次)。未完成者扣期末成績五分。
