Course syllabus

Objectives

Course syllabus

Objectives

Teaching methods

A. Attendance: This class is designed so that knowledge is developed throughout the semester and involves a series of in-class lectures, discussions, workshops and activities. Accordingly, missing class is a serious issue and will result in you not being able to complete the class assignments. If you must miss class, please notify me as soon as possible before you miss the class. You are expected to come to the next class fully prepared. PowerPoint slides and materials used in class will be on Moodle. It is your responsibility to be prepared for next class by referring to the syllabus, contacting me, or asking your classmates.
• You are allowed to miss ONE class. If you miss one class for the semester, points will not be deducted.
• For each absence beyond 1, 50 points will be deducted from your final grade.
• For excused absences, you must inform the instructor in advance.
• If you have SIX or more than six unexcused absences, you will receive an “F” score for this course.
• If you attend every class, then I will provide extra points at the end of the semester.
• Two tardies (being late/leaving early) count as one absence.
B. Individual Conferences: You will be required to attend ONE one-on-one conferences with the instructor during the semester. Don’t forget that individual conferences are very important to get individualized feedback, to grow as a writer and, of course, to get high grades on your papers. If you do not attend your conferences, this will be counted as one absence from class. Besides those two individual conferences throughout the semester, make use of my office hours to meet with me to get one-on-one feedback on your work.
C. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is defined as using someone else’s words, original ideas, or data in your work of writing without giving proper credit or reference to the creator. In other words, you present another person’s ideas as your own. This is a very serious issue that can result in failing for this course. Violations of academic integrity will not be tolerated. A lesson on how to avoid plagiarism and cite sources appropriately will be given in class.
D. Late Work: No late work will be accepted. Not being in class does not excuse you from presenting your work on time. If you have a legitimate reason for being late with work, you must communicate by email with me before the deadline. Decisions regarding this matter will be made at the instructor’s discretion. Even in this case, your grade will not be as good as it would be when you submit your work on time. You should make sure that you always save your work and have back-up files. Lost files or laptop or printer breakdown cannot be an excuse for your late work.
E. Email: You are expected to check your email every day. Email is a main communication method with the instructor and the best way for you to reach me to ask questions or discuss your concerns. During the semester, I will respond to student emails within 48 hours. If you don’t get a response within 48 hours, please send me a reminder. If I need to cancel class, I will contact you via email.
F. Electronic Devices: Cell phones should be switched off or on mute mode during the class time. Laptop or tablets are permitted when having in-class writing assignments. However, if you are expecting an emergency or important call, you may inform me and leave the cell phone on.
G. Standards for Written Work: All assignments should be submitted in A4-size papers and typed in Times New Roman 12-point font and double-spaced with one-inch or 2.54 centimeters margins all around. For your protection, keep all your work until after the final semester grades are posted!

Course syllabus
